You might seek more support, coverage, or a style that emphasizes your favorite features.”

Michelle Barrett, stylist and founder of Capsule Closet Stylist, suggests finding bathing suits that highlight the parts of your body you feel best about while gently drawing attention away from areas you might be less confident in. This approach ensures that you feel both stylish and comfortable.

When in doubt, certain timeless swimsuit styles are always a good choice. Here are the top five swimsuit styles recommended by experts for those over 50:

The V-neck one-piece is a universally flattering cut that works for all ages and body types. “Plunging V-necks accentuate the waist by directing the eye toward it,” explains Elizabeth Kosich, an FIT-certified image stylist. “To emphasize and minimize the waistline, look for swimsuits with a wide plunging V—the wider the straps, the smaller the waist will appear.” Cami Raymond, senior design director of Ruby Ribbon, recommends one-pieces with compression panels for a streamlined effect, double layers of fabric for added shaping, and adjustable straps for a customized fit.

2. Tankini

For those who want a bit more skin exposure than a one-piece allows but still prefer extra coverage around the midsection, a tankini is a perfect compromise. “The tankini is ideal for those with a longer torso or pear body type, as it helps create a more balanced silhouette,” says Du.

3. High-waisted Bikini

The high-waisted bikini offers a stylish nod to retro ’50s fashion and never goes out of style. It provides more coverage around the midsection while allowing you to showcase the smallest part of your waist. “This style is especially flattering for apple and hourglass body types,” Du explains. Style expert Dianne Harper Boyer recommends choosing a top with an underwire for additional support and lift.

4. Ruched Halter One-piece

Ruching is a fantastic feature after 50 because it hides any unwanted lumps and bumps, says personal stylist Robin Saperstein. Opting for a ruched one-piece with a halter neck provides subtle lift and enhances curves. “With its clever gathers and tucks, this design helps camouflage any areas you might feel self-conscious about,” adds Du.

5. One-shouldered Swimsuit with Statement Ruffles

“Diagonal lines have a slimming and elongating effect,” says Kosich. “Look for prints, patterns, seaming, and color blocking on the diagonal. Anything asymmetrical works—including one-shoulder styles.” Whether you choose a one-piece or two-piece, strategically placed ruffles add a flirty touch and can help distract from areas you’re less confident about. A one-shoulder style also showcases sculpted arms and shoulders beautifully.
