Warning: 5 Shoes Over 65s Should Never Wear!

As we age, our habits, including the shoes we wear, can significantly impact our foot health and safety. Podiatrists caution against certain types of footwear for individuals over 65, as these shoes can increase the risk of trips, falls, and foot problems.

Zipper sneakers, while convenient, can pose a danger if they don’t close securely. Maurice Verhagen, a certified podiatrist, advises opting for sneakers with adjustable closures like laces or Velcro for better foot and ankle support, essential for stability and reducing tripping risks.

Indoor footwear matters too, with fluffy slippers being a surprising risk for trips and falls. Verhagen recommends stable, well-fitting slippers with closed heels and Velcro closures to improve balance and minimize fall risks, especially as balance can decline with age.

Boat shoes, popular for summer outings, may lack arch support and stability, leading to injuries. Podiatrists suggest looking for shoes with arch support or using orthopedic inserts for flat shoes to enhance stability and prevent foot problems.

High heels, particularly those over two and a half inches, are discouraged due to the instability, pressure on the ball of the foot, and increased risk of ankle sprains they can cause. Lower, sturdier block heels are a safer option, especially for older individuals concerned about foot health.

Flip-flops, while convenient for the beach, offer little support or cushioning, leading to discomfort, fatigue, and potential foot conditions like plantar fasciitis or Achilles tendonitis. Margaret Trevillion, a podiatrist, emphasizes the importance of supportive footwear, especially as feet may require more support with age-related changes, to avoid trips, falls, and foot problems.
