While many people have a particular destination in mind for their travels, understanding the underlying reasons for their journey is essential, according to Amie O’Shaughnessy, CEO of Ciao Bambino!, a travel agency specializing in trips for multiple generations.
“We like to uncover the ‘why’ behind the trip,” O’Shaughnessy says. “What motivates this choice? Is it the desire to visit renowned landmarks, spend quality time with family or friends, or simply relax? When travelers identify their emotional motivations, it becomes easier to design a trip that meets and exceeds their expectations.”
She recalls a poignant example of a group of veterans who traveled to Normandy with Road Scholar. “It was an incredibly meaningful experience—a dream come true for many, especially those with family ties to the area,” she shares. Given the current surge in travel, O’Shaughnessy advises that significant trips, especially to popular destinations, should be planned at least a year in advance, particularly if flights and accommodations are limited.
McClelland from Road Scholar notes that most participants book domestic trips about seven months in advance, while international trips require even more lead time. For solo travelers—who make up about a quarter to a third of their clientele—early booking is crucial to ensure availability.
What about the thrill of spontaneous travel? “Last-minute plans can sometimes result in great deals and unique experiences,” O’Shaughnessy acknowledges. “A skilled travel advisor can be invaluable here, providing insider knowledge and market insights that aren’t easily accessible.”
When it comes to defining a great vacation, opinions can be as diverse as the destinations themselves. To prevent conflicts and ensure everyone’s satisfaction, O’Shaughnessy recommends having an open discussion with your travel companions about their expectations and goals for the trip. She points out that river cruises and large resorts are excellent choices for multigenerational groups, as they typically offer activities for all ages and interests.
“During the day, travelers can pursue their own interests and activities,” she explains. “In the evening, they can come together to enjoy dinner and share their experiences.” This strategy ensures that everyone has a fulfilling and enjoyable vacation, tailored to their individual preferences.
