However, as you enter your senior years, the use of supplements can become more complex and potentially risky, especially when they interact with prescription medications.

According to Dr. Leann Poston, a licensed physician and health advisor, some supplements can cause complications in older adults due to interactions with common prescription drugs. Consulting your doctor before taking supplements is crucial to ensure their safety and compatibility with your medications.

Certain supplements are particularly concerning for individuals over 60. St. John’s wort, often used for mild depression, can interact with medications like statins, blood thinners, antidepressants, migraine drugs, and heart failure medications, warns Dr. Patricia Pinto-Garcia, a medical editor.

Vitamin E, known for its immune-boosting properties, can increase bleeding risk when taken with medications like aspirin, Coumadin, or Eliquis, especially for those with malabsorption issues, notes Dr. Sarah Trahan.

Ginseng, although traditionally used for memory and immune support, can interfere with diabetes medications and lower blood sugar levels, advises Dr. Pinto-Garcia.

Magnesium, popular for various health benefits, can cause electrolyte imbalances and heart rhythm disturbances, particularly in individuals with impaired kidney function, explains Dr. Poston.

Ginkgo biloba, often taken for cognitive health, can increase bleeding risk, especially for those on blood thinners or with bleeding disorders, according to nutritionist Beata Rydyger.

Turmeric, known for its anti-inflammatory properties, can interact with medications like iron and other blood thinners, leading to decreased absorption and increased bleeding risk, warns registered dietician Lindsay Scaringella.

In light of these potential risks, experts advise seniors to prioritize communication with their healthcare providers and consider alternative strategies, such as dietary adjustments, to support their health and well-being without compromising safety.
